Cecil Pocock - Headmaster

Cecil Pocock - Headmaster

Scotty Macdonald17 Dec 2013 - 06:26

I included a request for "Cecil Pocock" stories in the recent Concordia, I never thought the first one would be from Sir Michael Wilshaw [Ofsted]!

In the December Concordia I requested any Cecil Pocock thoughts and reminiscences, or requests for any articles on ANY Clapham College teachers.

Ex-chairman Ted Hayter discovered a long interview with Sir Michael Wilshaw in this Sunday's Observer; where the knighted Old Xaverian paid homage to Cecil. Mr Wilshaw who attended Clapham College from 1957 to 1964 - [sorry no other details].... in the middle of a long interview [including his views on Grammar Schools] reported this gem.

"......but this is not the full story of Sir Michael Wilshaw. He becomes almost dewy-eyed when asked who was his inspiration: a man called Cecil Pocock, who taught him History in Clapham, South London. "I don't know if he is still alive. I hope so," he says softly."

We can affirm that Cecil is alive, and Sir Michael is only one of hundreds of Xaverians who have been inspired by "Mr Pocock"..... comments PLEASE, if thoughts of Cecil bring a tear to the Chief Inspector of Ofsted that's not a bad start for "others" to add their stories,

Scotty
