Visiting the "Brothers at Mayfield"

Mayfield 2013

Visting the final resting place of many of the Brothers who taught us at Clapham should be a sobering experience.

Nothing much has changed as you enter the site - then you see the Car Park and Sales Office for the high quality flats on sale in what was the main teaching block. They really are quality convertions and they have extended the accomodation with a huge extension to the West of the site of about 50 flats built in a similar style.

The Chapel is now "No 4" and another flat [I found that disappointing]. You then look down the grounds past the old cricket square to the swimming pool - looks the same as 40/50 years ago, the cricket pavillion s still there, though I'm not sure what it's used for.

The White House beside the "Brother's Graveyard" is still there, looks exactly the same. The gate to the graveyard is exactly as it was, then you see the names "Peter, Ambrose, Dunstan, Stephens ...etc etc" and memories flood back.

The simple crosses are impressive, but their condition is not, they are scattered around and fallen and look rather sad. I straighten a few up and thought - they deserve better than this. The grass needs tending, the crosses need repositioning, many require renovation [are rusty and in need of painting].

I'm no expert but for two or three grand this place could be returned to it'ds former glory. We all met togrether at Clapham 25 years ago to celebrate 100 years of the Brothers at Clapham - a great social event. I feel there need is at Mayfield in 2013 to show what they all meant to us as an Association.

I don't know if anyone is charged with tending the ground, if so it is sorely lacking. Mayfield 2013 is still a part of our Legacy [if unfortunately a sad one]. I'm sure it's future is in OUR HANDS!

The Bicyle Arms is now residential housing, the pubs in the village are still there, the priest at St Thomas of Canturbury is an Old Xavarian, you can still re-live those memories of Summer Camps, Cecil Pocock, "Blackboys", the Village Pub and Shop, that freezing leaf-covered pool, cricket on the field, Mayfield Picnics, meeting Ambie....
But as of today March 2013 the place needs a "project" before it's too late.

Have added some photos - any thoughts
